The brief

Replicate a natural bunya cone for Xzibit, retaining the layered scales and surface character of the original through digital capture, fabrication and scenic finishing.

Capture and review

The source cones were 3D scanned, then digitally processed into usable models. The project update and design proof show a review stage with renders before fabrication began.

From data to object

Trade Arts’ scope covered scan preparation, 3D printing, assembly, surface preparation and scenic paintwork. The physical replica carries the shape captured from the natural object through to a painted display piece.

Surface and finish

The process images compare photographed originals, digital models and painted replicas. They show how both the geometry and the variation in green and brown surface colour contribute to the finished object.
